Born and raised in Rural Michigan, studied art at Western Michigan University. I have been painting for more than twenty years. Moved from Michigan to Chicago after college and from there I traveled and lived in many cities across the United States. Charlotte has been my home for over seven years. Traveling has allowed me to experience many different occupations, such as working with a sculpture/furniture maker, interior and landscape designers, or as a bartender, waiter, and cook and nursery manager, meanwhile painting all the time. Exhibiting any where I can, most frequently in my studio, also in bars and cafes in cities like Chicago, Seattle, and Charlotte in a plant nursery in Tahoe.
My works in art and landscape design are extremely intertwined, trying to capture a poetic moment, through rhythm, color, and the art of placement. Experimenting with foliage texture influences my painting palettes hues and tones. Rockwork, woodwork and tree and shrub placement reflect my theories on composition. Inspired by the quiet drama of a Japanese tea garden, I try to recreate the elements that make the moments, such as a breeze through a field of sunflowers, the shadow of an oak leaf on the sidewalk, or a wave crashing the shore.
The subject matter of my painting jumps all over the place, although there are a few recurring motifs. I like to take an idea and create a group of paintings that reflect the many different views of that particular moment. Each series is an experiment in theory of color, composition, or style. In the near future I am going to work on more city landscapes and how the things we build as a society reflect or obscure the landscape.
Thank you for your time.
